Nunney Castle.

A walk including castle with moat, stream, ducks, wooded areas, cafe and pub!

3km walk.

Dogs – Yes.

Push chairs – No.

There’s so much to see and do on this mainly flat walk around a beautiful Somerset village.

Nunney was quite a drive from Clevedon, but it has a castle so I think it was definately worth it. We parked right by the castle on Castle Street, BA11 4NJ. Walk straight to the castle, it’a a small but lovely castle, if I drew a castle it would look like this. It’s got a lovely moat all the way round and a little bridge to cross and throw sticks and stones off. There’s no roof on the castle so it’s useless for sheltering if it’s raining like it was when we went, but it’s still got all its turrets. Watch out for frogs! There were loads of tiny frogs on the ground when we went.

Back out the gate of the castle you can cross a little bridge into the high street. Turn left and you’ll pass the George pub which has a been garden for refreshments after you’ve finished walking. On your left is a stream which the kids can paddle in and there’s ducks which are always a hit with my kids.

Carry on and turn left at Donkey Lane. At the end carry on down the private road to Coombe Farm and you’ll see a kissing gate in the right just before the house.

After not too long the path opens out into a lovely meadow with a wide streach of stream which is shallow and perfect for paddling. We had our picnic here.

Further on is the wooded area where you walk beside the stream and it’s perfect for a hot summers day with plenty of shade and the stream to cool off in. We had rain, but nevermind.

There is a bridge further up, we got tired and waded across to the otherside of the stream and walked back on that side for a bit of variety. If you do this you’ll reach a sewage treatment works. Don’t worry, just walk up the side of it then right up a small hill and to the left of the fence is a small path which will lead you back to the stream.

You’ll end up in a large field full of horse jumps (or at least it was when we went). You can paddle back across the stream here or there is a bridge to the left of  the paddling area. Then you just head back the way you came.

Alternatively, there is a footpath at the other end of the field which leads to the castle.

After your walk, you can get refreshed at the George pub or there’s a little cafe on the corner of Castle Street. We were lucky and there was an open gardens event on so we had tea and cake in the church and then watched a live ten piece traditional jazz band in a posh garden. What a village!
